Lhyfe, Austrian construction group partner on green hydrogen projects in Germany
Pioneering green hydrogen producer Lhyfe and Austrian technology group for construction services STRABAG have signed a strategic co-development agreement for hydrogen projects in Germany.
The framework aims to accelerate the development and implementation of green hydrogen projects in particular, in an environment marked by Germany’s transposition of the Renewable Energy Directive III into national law.
The partners may extend to developing projects in other European countries in future, but the focus is on Germany as the country becomes one of the most advanced markets in structuring demand for renewable hydrogen.
Lhyfe and STRABAG laud the country for creating a regulated and predictable market framework, which is encouraging investment and use of renewable hydrogen for industrial players.
Meanwhile, the partnership between Lhyfe and STRABAG combines Lhyfe’s operational expertise in green hydrogen with STRABAG’s recognised and long-standing expertise in construction to accelerate project development.
Lhyfe became Europe’s largest producer of bulk renewable hydrogen from water electrolysis in 2025, meeting the EU’s highest sustainability standards.
With four green hydrogen production sites already installed and certified, two additional sites under construction, a fleet of more than 80 Type 4 hydrogen containers, and 15 storage sites, Lhyfe has become one of Europe’s pioneering producers and suppliers of green hydrogen with “unmatched” operational experience, the company says.
In turn, STRABAG is able to cover the entire lifecycle of construction projects from structuring, planning and engineering to execution and long-term operation. The group has extensive experience in financing and investment, which helps to ensure the economic viability of projects and secure their long-term financing.
STRABAG also actively advances modern infrastructure solutions and develops sustainable energy systems.
The partnership between the companies will enable faster project planning and implementation, targeted reduction of development and execution risks and efficient advancement of hydrogen projects in Germany.
“Green hydrogen is a valuable tool for decarbonising energy-intensive industries. STRABAG already has extensive experience in the construction of renewable-energy infrastructure and will contribute to its further development,” says STRABAG division manager Wolfgang Zechmeister.
Lhyfe chief strategy officer Luc Graré adds that the partnership comes at a decisive moment for the market. “Combining STRABAG’s industrial and construction expertise with Lhyfe’s experience as Europe’s largest producer of renewable hydrogen creates a strong foundation to accelerate project development and execution.
“This partnership with a leading player such as STRABAG also reflects the level of maturity reached by Lhyfe and the confidence placed in our industrial know-how,” Graré concludes.
